10 Practical Tips for Personal Brand Success

It is your personal brand that gives you the ability to build long-term relationships and trust with your online community. People are more likely to rely and believe on a person than a product that is being sold. Personal branding allows you to make yourself an expert in your niche. In addition, this allows you to be more competitive. There is one thing your competitor will never have, and that is you.
Now, grab a cup of joe because this is going to be long, yet very resourceful.

1. Tell your own unique story

Think about the things that make you the expert in your niche or industry. It is a given fact that people are interested in knowing how you got to where you are today. Fill your audience in on your story. Let them know how you got from point A to point B. Humans face obstacles when going from point A to point B. Talk about these in details. Remember when you were the underdog ? Talk about it! Everyone loves happy endings, so try to give it to them.

One perfect example is the movie “The Pursuit of Happiness”. This film showed how the main character started from living in bathrooms to eventually becoming a famous stock broker. It showed all his struggles from Point A to Point B. Similarly, turn your story into an inspiration to help build your identity and brand.

2. Do you have a voice?

Lately, I have been noticing many social networks that have contents but sadly they have no voice. If you have a vanilla personality on your social networks, it will just bore your audience. Take the time to “find your voice” and then find a way to communicate that voice to your target audience. Take these three things into consideration:

Be authentic — Communicate in the same way you would to someone as if you are talking in person. Then focus on transferring your real voice into content. This can be a blog post, speaking engagement, video, or even podcast. If you try to act like someone you’re not, it will clearly show.

Be Simple As much as possible, create messages that are simple and clear to your audience. Make sure you include a call-to-action in every part of your message. Don’t try to sound smart because it will be obvious. My favorite book that talks about this is called “Rework”, whose writing style is so simple, yet clear. It is straightforward, yet it keeps you wanting to read more.

Be Opinionated There is no “in between”, and if you try to please everyone then you will fail. Try to add value by communicating your opinion. If you are just regurgitating what others are saying then you are not adding value for your target audience. People that communicate their own perspective are able to engage their audience and build a buzz.

3. Design

What is your brand’s design? How do you want to communicate your design to your target audience? I know many of you are thinking, “don’t judge a book by its cover”. However, the internet is so competitive that you only get a short-period of time to convince your audience. The first impression is your design and this either makes or breaks your brand. Use professional photographs and a catchy motto. Make sure your stand out in your blog, Twitter profile or Facebook page.

Consistency is the key. Remember to make all the elements of your brand, such as messages, photographs, and color scheme the same on every social network.
People should be able to easily recognize you so they can follow you.

4. Transparency

Naturally, people want to hear from human beings, not PR agencies, or auto responders. They want to hear from an authentic person. As you build your personal brand, people also expect to learn more about who you are. Limit the use of your privacy settings so you can reach out to as many as possible. People are interested in seeing you walk the talk while staying authentic. If you make a mistake on one of your networks, make sure you do not cover up mistake. Instead, issue an apologize to your community.

5. Platforms

Which channels are you using to engage your target audience? Make sure you are using these platforms to express your messages, promote your services, share other people’s content, and create a buzz (conversations between prospects, competitors, clients, etc.) Don’t just jump on the bandwagon and set up your social networks, think about the strategies you are going to use within the social networks. How are you going to deliver your message to your target audience?

Note: Think about which platforms make sense to reach your target audience and what type of media you will use. For example, if you want to blog then use WordPress. You might want consider using a theme or customizing it.

6. Self-Marketing

Keep in mind that a great content won’t be just a promotional on its own. You have to use micro-blogging, social bookmarking and social networks in order to promote your products or service. Think of it as becoming a great speaker with a very important message. However, if you never make it onto the stage, then you will never be able deliver your message.

7. Social Proof

Social proof is when you see a book and it says “Best Selling author…” or when you watch a movie that says “Oscar winning actor…”. They help build your credibility on the web. In social networks, it is a little bit different. They are not only looking at your recognitions but also the amount of subscribers you have and the media features that you received. For example, if someone knows you worked for CNN then this automatically builds your credibility and social proof up.

Now it is your turn, what can you say about yourself? Have you worked for any big brands or clients? Are you featured on publications or blogs?

One way to build your social proof is through having testimonials from past clients. This will help your online community build a trust bond with you.

8. Partnerships

When it comes to being credible, building partnerships is one way to help you become one. Through partnerships, you are allowing yourself to get exposed to other networks. This is fairly common nowadays through online courses, eBooks, webinars, etc. When you work in collaboration with others, chances are you increase your potential to succeed. Remember to make sure the partner you choose is highly influential within their community. It would be helpful to find someone who is doing as much as you or even more. For example, Jay-Z on his own is a superstar, Beyonce on her own is a big name, and together they are a superpower house that people look up to.

9. Products

You can establish your credibility through your products. For online users, these products refer to e-books, online courses, membership sites, etc. However, If you still do not have a high quality product just yet, then start creating one. You might wish to start by giving out free products but try to get your name on the important covers out there. But since there many products available out there, how to make your product unique now becomes challenging. You don’t want to commit “brand suicide” so be smart in choosing the product that you want to offer.

10. Online Community

Please take a note that your online community will not be built over night. They take time and they are built through leadership. It is important that you are able to educate your community by answering questions and solving problems. Try to become an asset in someone else’s life. When you make others stand out and change or improve their lives, you will gain their trust. This will help you establish a large community and long-term relationships.
