How To Make Your Blog Posts SEO-Friendly

Do you want search engines to favor your blog?  Do you want it to top any list of search results?  Here are the secrets to optimizing your posts and reaching the most people:

1. Have a catchy title

If you have a title that attracts attention, then it’s catchy, and as I’ve mentioned they make all the difference: they pull people to your blog and get you new readers.

Make your title suggest value to your audience.  People use search engines to find what they need, so who needs to read your blog?  Titles show how important the posts are.

On a scale of one to ten, one being the worst and ten the best, how would you rate the title to this post?

2. Use keywords in the title

You can find keywords online through tools such as Google Adwords and Google Wonder Wheel.  Competition is increasing in every industry, so it’s important to know what your industry’s keywords specifically are.

For example: Internet Marketing for Restaurants and Hotels; Prenatal Massage Therapy San Diego, Ca; and Social Media for Small Businesses.

3. Keep titles simple and short

Limit yourself to forty characters per title.  Not only will a short title be to the point, but also the entire thing will show up in search results.

4. Organize the post in three parts

In part one, introduce the topic mentioned in your catchy title.  Be clear, simple, and consistent.  In part two, expand on the issues and get into detail – share your concerns and thoughts on the topic.  Keep readers engaged: by giving them value they’ll want to finish reading.  In part three, provide a resolution, answer questions, and ask for feedback – asking questions at the end allows readers to answer in the comments section and maximizes the buzz on each blog post.

5. Create subheadings in bold text

This makes it easier for readers to scan through your article.

6. Make your readers part of the article

Engage them by having it relate to them.  For example, write as though you were writing to a friend—this creates good feeling and trust.

7. Use links, bold keywords, or both

Your articles must have keywords, and the best SEO practice would be to hyperlink your keywords to your other blog posts.  This way your readers stay on your website and you don’t lose them.

8. Keep posts short

Chris Brogan’s posts are a great example, they’re helpful and yet not too wordy.  You don’t want to bore your readers.

9. Summarize at the end

Make sure you have take-home messages at the end of each post, just in case readers missed the main points.

10. Call for action!

If you give your readers value, they’re likely to do what you ask, but nothing will happen if you don’t ask them to do anything.

11. Match tags to keywords

You find tags when you’re posting a blog entry.  Make sure they match the bold keywords and links.

12. Promote, promote, promote!

Reach out to as many people as you can and give them the scoop on your blog.  Twitter is a great micro-blogging service, as are Facebook and Linked-In. Launch your RSS feed into the blogosphere.
